Loop Brings Needed Food to Local Charities

While we may think that any food is good food for local charities and food banks, the truth is that these noble organizations are sometimes overwhelmed by food that they can’t make use of. For example, since bread can be plentiful from bakeries and grocery stores, it tends to be one of the most prolific donations to charities which means that these charities often can’t make use of it all, or can’t dispense it to those in need before it goes bad.

This means that charities are left with waste and are now on the hook to pay for disposal, creating a financial burden on these already cash-strapped non-profits.

When it comes to other types of food like dairy and meat, charities almost always need these nutritious ingredients but they also need advance notice to find a place to store these perishables that require refrigeration. If this food is dropped off without warning, it can create wasted food as it can’t be appropriately stored until it is given to clients.

Loop’s first goal when helping grocery stores divert food from the landfill is to ensure our local charities and food banks get only the food that they need when they need it.

We work directly with participating grocery stores that are able to give to charities to find out which food items they have to give and then coordinate with charities to ensure they receive food that is great quality, and that they can use immediately so that they aren’t burdened with disposal costs for food they have no room or no use for. And, of course, whatever food doesn’t get used is happily devoured by the animals of grateful farmers!

If you are a Loop farmer and you get your pickups from Save-On-Foods, you are contractually permitted to offer any edible food you receive to a charity of your choosing, just be sure to always call them in advance and ask them what they’re looking for so that you’re only delivering useful, needed food.

Many registered charities across Canada are already working with Loop, and love that they can trust us to provide a wide variety of food products they can use to feed hungry people in our communities.
